Vitamin C Skin Whitening…

Blemishes, dark spots, acne scars — you may have one or more of these on your skin. Or you may simply be looking for a way to lighten certain areas or even your entire skin tone to get that overall healthy glow. Aside from the many skin whitening products available commercially, did you know that there are various natural alternatives to whiten skin and help fade any blemishes and dark spots? Vitamin C and turmeric are two natural ingredients that can help you attain skin whitening without the harsh chemicals found in commercial creams and serums.

The Role of Vitamin C in Skin Whitening

Vitamin C may
be a very common household vitamin, but it is one of the most beneficial for overall health. It is known for its antioxidant activity, where it helps prevent cellular and tissue damage by quenching free radicals. It is a vital component in the body’s production of collagen, the main protein responsible for the structure of the skin, bones and muscles. It also helps boost immunity, aids in iron absorption, and can even protect against various cardiovascular conditions.

To understand Vitamin C’s role in skin whitening, let’s first talk about the process of pigmentation. The agent responsible for skin pigmentation and darkening is called melanin. Melanin is produced by specialized skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes work to convert the amino acid tyrosine into the pigment melanin, and this is done with the aid of an enzyme called tyrosinase. The more melanin your skin produces, the darker your skin will be.

Vitamin C is a known tyrosinase inhibitor. Thus, when you take Vitamin C or when it comes into contact with the melanocytes in the dermis (the skin’s inner layer), it then blocks tyrosinase from working to produce melanin. This means that if tyrosinase is blocked, there is lesser melanin produced, making you have lighter skin.

Turmeric in Skin Whitening

A scientific study investigated
the ability of curcumin, turmeric’s active ingredient, in affecting tyrosinase activity and melanin production. Amazingly, results of this study have shown that curcumin is able to block the production of melanin, thus boosting skin whitening. Higher doses were observed to be more effective in inhibiting tyrosinase activity and decreasing melanin content.

This shows that our all-star golden spice doesn’t just work for serious conditions; it has various applications in skin whitening as well!

Vitamin C Skin Whitening and Turmeric Mask

Both Vitamin C
and turmeric can help in skin whitening. Now, how do you use them? Dermatological studies have found that consuming Vitamin C and Turmeric may be beneficial for the skin (and overall health), however, oral consumption usually leaves only a very small amount of Vitamin C in skin tissues. This means that a better option is to apply it directly onto the skin.

To maximize your skin whitening regimen, using both turmeric and Vitamin C regularly as a mask can help you achieve the results you desire. Here are some instructions for a power-packed turmeric and Vitamin C skin whitening mask to get that gorgeous glowing skin:

Supplies you will need:

1/2 tablespoon L-ascorbic acid powder (L-ascorbic acid is one the active forms of Vitamin C)

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon organic turmeric powder

1 teaspoon organic honey, melted coconut oil, or fresh aloe gel

1/8 teaspoon water (this is optional; you can add this in if you think the mixture is too viscous)

How to prepare and use:

Get a small bowl
and a small face brush. Simply mix together all ingredients until you get a smooth paste. Then, use the brush to scoop out some of the mixture, applying and spreading on the face or on the area you wish to lighten. Remember to avoid the eye area during application. Leave the mask on for about 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. You can now pat your face dry.

Some precautions:

  • Note that some tingling may occur (this is normal) but if it gets too tingly, rinse off the paste immediately.
  • Turmeric can stain clothing and even the skin if too much is added or if left for too long. Be sure to test in another skin area first before using.

Regular application of this turmeric and Vitamin C whitening mask is encouraged to help you get the results you want. Using this mask will surely help you be on your way to brighter, even-toned skin without blemishes and dark spots!
